2024 Woodwind Festival & Young Artist Competition

IOWinds Alliance 2024 Young Artist Competition

(Optional) : Deadline August 22

The deadline for the 2024 Young Artist Competition has now passed.

Please look for information in Spring of 2025 for the 2025 Young Artist Competition.

Open to all woodwind students in Iowa entering grades 7 - 12 in Fall 2024. Students will compete in the following categories: 7 - 8th grade, 9 - 10th grade, and 11 - 12th grade.

Prizes per category are:

1st place: $250 | 2nd: $200 | 3rd: $150 | 4th: $100 | 5th: $50

Interested students must submit separate registration forms for both the Woodwind Festival and the Young Artist Competition.

Students must submit a prescreening video as a YouTube link as part of the Young Artist Competition Registration form by August 22 to be considered. Late applications are not accepted. Finalists will be announced no later than August 31st.

The live final round will be held at West Music in Coralville. Please see our competition guidelines for more details.

First Place winners will perform their solo pieces. All winners are announced at the final concert at 5pm.

Warm Up with Teaching Artists

Exercises given to help students learn how to better warm up on their instrument in preparation for a lesson, rehearsal, or practice session.

10:00 - 10:45 am

Instrumental Topics with Teaching Artists

Specialized topics for each instrument that further instruct students on how to deal with technical issues and challenges that are unique to their instrument. Each student will be actively learning new skills and how to address problems on their own to help guide them in these areas when they are practicing individually.

10:50am - 11:45 am

Ensemble Rehearsal

Students will rehearse for the final concert.

11:50 am - 12:30 pm

Masterclasses with Teaching Artists

Each student will be given the opportunity to play a piece of their choice for their instrument group during this time. During the masterclass, the Teaching Artists will over insights and tips for how to improve on a given piece of music in addition to broader perspectives.

12:40 - 1:25 pm

Lunch

Lunch will be provided as part of the Woodwind Festival. If you have dietary restrictions, please bring your lunch.

1:30 - 2:10 pm

Q+A in Concert Hall

Bring your questions about music and the arts to have them answered by a panel of professional musicians.

2:15 pm - 3:00 pm

All-State Solo Masterclasses

This masterclass will assist students in their solo preparation for All-State. Students will meet in instrument groups with their respective Teaching Artist.

3:00 pm - 3:45 pm

All-State Etude Masterclasses

This masterclass will assist students in their etude preparation for All-State. Students will meet in instrument groups with their respective Teaching Artist.

4:00 pm - 4:30 pm

Ensemble Dress Rehearsal

Students will rehearse for the final concert.

4:30 pm - 5:00 pm

Break

Students will have this time to get ready for final concert.

5:00 pm - 6:30 pm

Concert in Coralville Performing Arts Center Concert Hall.

This event is ticketed and open to the public.
